Husky Squash Update (Feb 8, 2015)
The University of Washington Squash Club Team just returned from a 4-1 showing at the West Coast Round Robin held Jan 31 and February 1 at Stanford. The Squash Dawgs downed Oregon and USC 9-0, Notre Dame 8-1 and squeaked out a 5-4 win over long-time rival Cal. Always strong Stanford, ranked #27 in the country, trounced the 51st ranked Huskies 9-0.
This year’s team is led by #1 player Andres Yepez, a freshman from Ecuador. Team co-captains, junior Jai Padmakumar and senior Kaija Perkiomaki, hold down the #2 and #4 spots for now. Perkiomaki has just been invited to play in the women’s National Individiual Collegiate Championships, a real honor for someone who has never played a women’s match in college. Due to lack of a women’s team at UW, she’s been a star for the “men’s” team for three years. Former US Open Junior Champion Claudia Regio competed and won 4 of her 5 matches at the #3 position.
The Huskies are coached by recent Dartmouth graduate Chris Jung, a Seattle native now a grad student at UW. He is assisted by Kate Nimmo, another Dartmouth squasher, with occasional assistance from Manuela Manetta, former Italian National Women’s Champion and a professional at the Seattle Athletic Club.
For the first time in several years, the UW team has a very solid turnout this year, with 12-13 players practicing regularly and 10 traveling members. Only two current travel team members are seniors, meaning the team will have a solid core for next year. The second senior, BG Court, has played solidly at the #4 position and had a key victory in the close match against Cal, against an opponent who had bettered him last year.
Rounding out the travel team are freshman Malcolm Daigle from Portland, who played a solid #6 position, junior transfer from Seattle Central, Hong Kong native Joyce Kian, freshman Aman Bawa from Mumbai, and returning sophomores Steven Shi from China and Andrew Kim from Anchorage.
The Husky team, while not the only team with a woman competing in the men’s division, is unique in that women occupy three of our top seven positions.

2015 OREGON OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Feb. 16 – 21, 2015 – Portland, OR
Multnomah Athletic Club will be hosting the 2015 Oregon Open Championship which runs Feb. 16 through Feb. 21.
The Oregon Open committee is pleased to announce a very exciting entry of players from 10 different countries in the main draw, with two players each from England and the US.
India’s top player, Saurav Ghosal, the current World No. 24, is the #1 seed. Saurav became the first Indian player to claim a place in the world’s top 20 when he rose to his career-high World No. 16 PSA ranking a year ago. Not only that, he became the first Indian ever to reach the quarter-finals at the World Championship in 2013, narrowly losing out to Ramy Ashour. The #2 seedAdrian Grant from England is an accomplished tour veteran and reached a career-high World No. 9 in 2009. Adrian’s successful carrier is evidenced by him being the Englishman with the second highest tally of PSA titles, behind Nick Matthew. Faraz Khan, our invited Wildcard, is a US National Team player who is working very hard to move up in the rankings. He came highly endorsed by Adam Perkiomaki, the 2014 Wildcard.
Portland’s own champion Julian Illingworth will of course be playing. Julian is the No. 2 seed in the qualification draw, which also will be very competitive. Julian is sure to get a real good workout in making the main draw ! The qualification draw is another reason for excitement. It will be announced later and includes the 2014 U17 British Open Champion, Youssef Soliman from Egypt. Youssef just turned professional as well as 18; watching his talent will be a treat ! At the moment Charlie Wagner is the sole local amateur making it into the qualification in a local spot. At pro player entry deadline, the reserve list totaled nearly 70 players. Oregon Open is popular on the tour !
Help with sponsorship or buy tickets ! An individual weekly pass is available for $150 or go for a package and get more perks. The $350 Family Weekly Tournament Pass comes with three seats to every match, two official tournament shirts and two tickets our new Meet-And-Greet Player and Sponsor Party, where pass holders can meet the pro players.
Purchasing packages is helps reach the funding goal of $28,000, including the $15,000 in prize money that attracts such a high quality field of professionals to our city.
There will also be lots of Junior events during the Oregon Open: clinics with the pros, exhibition matches, etc. If you want to support or buy a pass, please let Anders Giltvedt know.

Howe Cup 2014
McArthur Squash Center
The 2014 US Squash Women’s Team Championship (Howe Cup) was held a the beautiful new squash facility at Boar’s Head Inn which is as part of the University Of Virginia McArthur Squash Center. This is a state of the art squash facility with iPad score keeping and display at each court. Once again, Seattle players were well represented by Seattle Plus in the A division and Seattle Hattitudes in the B division. The Seattle Plus A team included Seattle Athletic Club Squash Professional Manuela Manetta, Claire Gomersall, Claire Barker, Victoria Chishimba and Crosby Haynes. The Seattle Hattitudes B Team included Katie Toyoshima, Lulu Chou, Laura Bachman, Tracy Girolami and Sarah Walker. The B division had a total of 12 teams competing for the hard ware. This year’s competition was extremely competitive. Seattle Hattitudes played 5 matches to finish 9th out of 12. Each of the match ups were closely contested and well played. Even with this hectic playing schedule, the players also had a chance to do some historical sightseeing at Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. Howe Cup is not only about the matches but it’s about the friendships and socializing. Of course the Saturday night party was a hit with lots of dancing. Next year’s Howe Cup has already been announced to be in Boston at Harvard University. So mark your calendars for November 6-8th.
Full Results for all the teams that participated in Howe Cup is available at US Squash.

Seattle based squash professional player Shah Khan achieved a new milestone by reaching his first final in a PSA tournament. Shah reached the final by beating the #1 seed and 3-time defending champion Dane Sharp (Canada) in a 5-game semi-final (7, (9), 8, (7), 4). He advanced and played well in the final but was beaten by #2 seeded Zac Alexander (Australia). Shah is currently world #121 and may soon crack the top 100 with a few more successes like this. When asked about this tournament, Shah commented, ” I am really happy to play my first PSA final it was a great one. I am really thankful to Allah, my family, my dad and coach Zarak Khan (former world no.8). I worked really hard for it. And inshallah, I hope many more to come“.
